More than the Buffalo Bills, spiedies or even the beautiful Finger Lakes, Wegmans is the standard bearer of Upstate New York.
We miss it when we move away, we cite it as a reason for returning. Those lucky enough to live within driving distance (an increasing number of Northeasterners beyond the base in Rochester) go not only to shop, but to stroll, marveling at all the exotic goods we didn’t know we needed or wanted.
High school students come before and after prom. Loners come in the middle of the night to talk to cashiers. Loved ones dash in at the last minute for Christmas gifts, Mother’s Day cards, and flowers.
In suburbia, Wegmans is the central business district, the downtown.
But as a family-owned business, the company keeps pretty tight control over coverage of its activities.
It’s high time someone blogged about the place.
