Let them eat cake on layaway

Posted on October 2, 2026October 2, 2026 by Wegmaniacal

People in the richest country in the world are having to use buy-now, pay-later plans to eat. Wegmans doesn’t have such a plan, nor does it accept BNPL payments. Yet nationwide, their usage is soaring. According to the Federal Reserve’s 2026 Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households report, one in five people who used BNPL during…

How Wegmans prices compare

Posted on October 1, 2026October 1, 2026 by Wegmaniacal

It’s well established that BJ’s, Costco and Walmart can beat Wegmans prices. But how do the top chains compare? In February, Consumer Reports surveyed the costs of selected items relative to Walmart and produced the following chart: The CR report came out a week before the U.S. bombed Iran, resulting in the closing of the…

Taking our shots

Posted on September 27, 2026September 27, 2026 by Wegmaniacal

Sept. 26, 2026 Today I went to Wegmans in Pittsford, NY, to pick up some prescriptions and get a full roster of vaccinations. Flu and covid were no problem, but I was told I was too young (I’m 71) for the RSV shot. “Says who?” I asked. Dr. Jeremy Cushman, I was told. “Is he…

Covid-19 doesn’t fit the Wegmans brand

Posted on December 20, 2020December 22, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

When it comes to its response to the pandemic, Wegmans is certainly not guilty of the same willful blindness as the Trump White House. It is not sponsoring rallies or discouraging people from wearing masks (although it did at the beginning.) Yet both Donald Trump and the Wegmans family have committed the same sin. They…

The new speakers’ corner

Posted on July 28, 2020July 28, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

Inevitably, our being cooped up in the house for months has led us to new methods of communication. Not just Zoom. I’m talking about front yards. Signs are popping up everywhere. Of course, Black Lives Matter and political campaign signs are plentiful, along with the “Congratulations to the Class of 2020” banners. But there’s so…

Praise the libraries

Posted on July 27, 2020July 27, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

My local library has reopened. Things are not back to normal, but it is still a pulse growing stronger, a steady sign of life. Life of the mind, heart of the community, survival of civilized society. My library means all these things to me. For the time being, it is a place of exchange rather…

Wegmans crime log: a stolen wallet, a repeat offender, and two young children left in car

Posted on July 26, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

PENFIELD, NY – A word to the wise: don’t leave your purse or backpack unattended in your shopping cart. (I’ve done this more times than I can count; an employee of the Pittsford Wegmans once scolded me for doing so, which got my back up. My bad.) The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department reports that a…

Politics on the grocery shelves

Posted on July 17, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

The most partisan item in Wegmans at the moment is a can of Goya beans. After Goya Foods President Bob Unanue praised the president, Trump opponents called for a boycott and Trump supporters stocked up. Ivanka Trump and her father, having no more serious subjects to occupy them, joined the fray by posing for endorsement…

Taking off my name tag

Posted on July 15, 2020July 15, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

I am no longer a Wegmans worker. Sleep deprivation and a recurring illness (not covid, thankfully), made me realize that the physical demands of the job were too much. The overnight shift puts you out of sync not only with your own biorhythms but with the rest of society. The isolation of keeping opposite hours,…

H/T to Wegmans

Posted on July 3, 2020July 4, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

At the risk of outing myself to my employers, I have a few positive things to say about Wegmans. I recently went through a coronavirus scare. Several days of severe gastrointestinal illness, matching some of the symptoms of COVID-19. Two days too sick to leave the house. A three-day wait for testing. A six-day wait…

About This Site

Upstate New Yorkers love their Wegmans, with a bond that newer customers in other parts of the East are discovering. As a customer and former employee, I share the obsession.

I launched Wegmaniacal in December 2019, to examine the cultlike following the company has developed since its founding in Rochester more than a century ago.

The site stagnated when I left Wegmans and returned to other endeavors. But with rising grocery prices, lowering environmental regulation, and pharmaceutical challenges, it’s time to resume writing here.

Much of what I have to say is positive. Nevertheless, the company is family owned and most of its operations are conducted in private. As a longtime journalist, I’ll also delve into topics Danny Wegman would prefer to keep behind closed doors.
