Petals or pastry? Choose pastry.

You probably don’t buy your Valentine flowers a week in advance.

Which is a pity, because floral prices at Wegmans soar in the runup to the big day. At my store, a dozen roses cost $12 yesterday; today they sell for $35.

Why? Lack of imagination. Roses are the standby choice, which means popular demand drives up the price.

A suggestion: buy your sweetheart a slice of Tres Leches Cake instead. It’s a customer favorite – vanilla cake soaked in  evaporated milk, condensed milk and whole milk, topped with whipped cream and a strawberry.

Much cheaper and much more seductive than flowers. Serve it with two forks and meet in the middle.

Added note: pasta isn’t a bad choice, either:

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, I wanted you to have the option to make a dozen delicious roses rather than buy ones that definitely don’t taste as good😜. This IGTV video shows you all the steps to creating your own ravioli roses. If you need even greater detail, there’s a full tutorial on youtube.com/SaltySeattle.

About This Site

Upstate New Yorkers love their Wegmans, with a bond that newer customers in other parts of the East are discovering. As a customer and former employee, I share the obsession.

I launched Wegmaniacal in December 2019, to examine the cultlike following the company has developed since its founding in Rochester more than a century ago.

The site stagnated when I left Wegmans and returned to other endeavors. But with rising grocery prices, lowering environmental regulation, and pharmaceutical challenges, it’s time to resume writing here.

Much of what I have to say is positive. Nevertheless, the company is family owned and most of its operations are conducted in private. As a longtime journalist, I’ll also delve into topics Danny Wegman would prefer to keep behind closed doors.
