Late Saturday night, a happily stoned young man asked me if we sold playing cards. I searched the new Wegmans app and was rewarded with page after page of beauty bars and body washes.
The guy wandered off as I continued to scroll. “Found ’em!” he finally shouted from several aisles away.
Since Wegmans launched its revised app on Jan. 14, the criticism has come nonstop. Customers complain of missing shopping lists, difficulties clipping coupons, and, as in my case, odd, unhelpful search results.
The problems were front-page news in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
“When you implement new technology, some things happen that you don’t anticipate,” Erica Tickle, Wegmans’ director of e-commerce, told the newspaper. “This often happens when a new app is launched.”
iPhone users on the Apple store give the app a rating of 2.6 out of 5, which, for the much-loved Wegmans, is like A-Rod being booed at Yankee Stadium.

Personally, I was put off by the setup – having to delete the old version and enter my password. (After all these years, who knew what that was?) The app also takes too long to load.
Customer griping hasn’t let up:
Oh hey @Wegmans I see you updated your app!

Ummm…..yeah, those search terms. You may want to work on that. pic.twitter.com/G0o2TNqJJf
I realize this makes me a cranky old person, but the new @Wegmans app is awful. It’s clearly designed for delivery customers and has lost any helpful features for people shopping in-store. pic.twitter.com/zf5yBsPfN7

The new @Wegmans app and website are HORRIFIC!!! Bring back the easy to use, faster, and nicer looking ones!

Adding my voice to the list of people screaming that the new @Wegmans app sucks. I don’t live in Fairfax, VA. Why does that cone up as my store? Really?
