You probably don’t buy your Valentine flowers a week in advance.
Which is a pity, because floral prices at Wegmans soar in the runup to the big day. At my store, a dozen roses cost $12 yesterday; today they sell for $35.
Why? Lack of imagination. Roses are the standby choice, which means popular demand drives up the price.
A suggestion: buy your sweetheart a slice of Tres Leches Cake instead. It’s a customer favorite – vanilla cake soaked in evaporated milk, condensed milk and whole milk, topped with whipped cream and a strawberry.
Much cheaper and much more seductive than flowers. Serve it with two forks and meet in the middle.
