I’ve been obsessed with cherries since I was a scabby-kneed kid climbing the gnarly tree in our back yard.
All kinds of cherries. Fresh, frozen, dried, preserved. Cherry pies, cherry juice (great with vodka and club soda), chocolate-covered cherries, even maraschino cherries.
So I was delighted to discover two unknown cherry products at my store. First, a sour cherry spread by Dalmatia, a Croatian company better known for its fig spreads. Delicious on bread and butter. I even tried it (successfully) on grilled cheese.
In the produce section, Tasmanian cherries, from the island off Australia. For all those fresh-fruit lovers who can’t wait for the summer harvest season, this is the perfect antidote to mid-February doldrums.
These should be accompanied by a warning for “sticker shock” I had a customer go off on me about the high cost and how she was not going to buy over-priced cherries. Like the food bar in the cafe section. Prices are posted, no one reads them
