This is not the first serious accident in a Wegmans lot. A 73-year-old woman died last month after being struck by a vehicle outside the Wegmans in Perinton, NY. The driver in that case, who was ticketed for failure to exercise due care, is a Wegmans employee.
A friend of mine had his car totalled in a Wegmans lot when it was struck by an unobservant teenaged driver. More than once, as I’ve walked from my car to the store entrance, I’ve had to thump the trunk of a vehicle backing into me.
It’s not clear what the company can do to prevent such incidents. The lots are usually well-lit and attended by company parking-lot attendants. Neither stores nor parking areas have around-the-clock presence of security officers, however.
Lot attendants, btw, wear vests or jackets with reflective strips. Here’s an idea: Wegmans should add the strips to the recyclable bags it’s now pushing at its New York stores.
In the meantime, check these strips on Amazon. And be hyper-vigilant.
