If you’re like me, you’re a regular of the Wegmans international foods aisles, where you can buy an array of ingredients from Asia and Italy, areas hard-hit by the Coronavirus.
Should you be worried about exposure to the virus through these products?
Health officials believe the virus, officially known as COVID-19, is spread from person to person, through coughs, sneezes or close contact.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the virus can survive briefly on surfaces and objects. However, it is unlikely that imported goods can carry the virus. “Coronaviruses generally don’t survive long on inanimate surfaces,” the Journal writes.
The Centers for Disease Control is more definitive:
Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases of COVID-19 in the United States associated with imported goods.
