We got your goat

Posted on February 2, 2020February 8, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

A thin man with a thick accent asks me if we carry goat meat. He doesn’t look hopeful. “Or lamb?” he suggests, as a compromise. The man obviously is new to Wegmans. Of course, we sell lamb. But we also sell goat meat, bone-in, frozen, at $9.99 for a two-pound bag. Right next to the…

Pre-game show at Wegmans

Posted on February 2, 2020February 8, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

The lines started forming early this morning, people pushing carts crammed with the essentials of Snack Food Sunday. They bought tubs of pretzels, myriad kinds of chips, and popcorn in two-pound bags. They loaded up on meatballs, pizza, wings, chili fixings, pasta fixings, sushi platters, guac, salsa and queso dip. And, after 8 a.m., beer,…

From Old Bay to eBay

Posted on January 31, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

Old Bay, the seasoning company owned by McCormick, is boasting that it “broke the internet” with its new hot sauce. The product, offered first on Old Bay’s website, sold out Wednesday within an hour of launch. Some of those lucky enough to make purchases are listing bottles online for as much as $50 a pop,…

Wegman vs. Bezos – a battle of David and Goliath?

Posted on January 30, 2020February 1, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

How worried is Wegmans about Amazon? The constant promotion of home delivery of Wegmans meals and groceries is one indication. Another sign, although more obscure, is Wegmans’ growing list of internet domain names. In the last two years, the company has registered 10 new names, many of them centered around delivery services. (A few examples:…

The sun still rose on Tuesday

Posted on January 28, 2020February 4, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

One customer joked about the bagapocalypse. A few seemed annoyed that they had forgotten their reuseable bags, or that cashiers had to charge a nickel per paper sack. But all in all, everyone coped. The first day of no plastic bags at Wegmans’s New York stores turned out to be the Y2K of the grocery…

You feel good. You knew that you would.

Posted on January 27, 2020January 27, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

The entrance to the typical Wegmans store delivers customers to a cornucopia of fresh produce. Beautiful purple eggplants, spiky pineapples, whole sections of berries and greens. The presentation amplifies the company motto: “Food you feel good about.” Yet increasingly, the profit center has been prepared foods. Wegmans has managed to meld your desire for junk…

Tech tics

Posted on January 26, 2020January 26, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

Late Saturday night, a happily stoned young man asked me if we sold playing cards. I searched the new Wegmans app and was rewarded with page after page of beauty bars and body washes. The guy wandered off as I continued to scroll. “Found ’em!” he finally shouted from several aisles away. Since Wegmans launched…

More from the Twitterverse

When I was 15 years old, and had just started working at wegmans, a woman yelled at me until I got teary eyed because I mistook her cucumbers for zucchini through the bag they were in. I wonder how she’s doing. Hope she’s ok. — Chelsea Flynn (@Chelsea072388) January 24, 2020 shopping at wegmans right…

Evil plastic, be gone

Posted on January 23, 2020January 26, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

We’re all bracing for the supermarket equivalent of a tectonic plate shift. On Monday, Jan. 27, Wegmans stores in New York State will stop using plastic bags. This is HUUUUGE. For customers, the company, employees, and the environment. Shoppers will have to buy reusable bags or use paper, at five cents a pop. The company’s…

About This Site

Upstate New Yorkers love their Wegmans, with a bond that newer customers in other parts of the East are discovering. As a customer and former employee, I share the obsession.

I launched Wegmaniacal in December 2019, to examine the cultlike following the company has developed since its founding in Rochester more than a century ago.

The site stagnated when I left Wegmans and returned to other endeavors. But with rising grocery prices, lowering environmental regulation, and pharmaceutical challenges, it’s time to resume writing here.

Much of what I have to say is positive. Nevertheless, the company is family owned and most of its operations are conducted in private. As a longtime journalist, I’ll also delve into topics Danny Wegman would prefer to keep behind closed doors.
