Burgers and dogs

Posted on April 22, 2020April 22, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

From the number of hot dog buns and hamburger rolls we’re selling, I’d say most people are shying away from all those exotic recipes flooding the web.

I totally get that. When the mind is fogged by anxiety, simple is good.

The number of recipe steps I’ll commit to has been reduced to two, maybe three. I’m willing to bake and simmer. Steam and sauté are too much. Anything with a French accent is beyond my reach.

And, of course, there are the limitations in ingredients. When was the last time you saw fresh pea pods?

I probably have some frozen peas in the refrigerator, but there will be no substitutions. My ability to adapt is being sapped elsewhere.

Even with the most basic of dishes, I’m likely to screw up. The scallops are oversalted, the potatoes mushy.

It’s almost as if my stove, upset by my lack of attention at a time when I should be able to provide plenty, is rebelling.

So burgers it is. On the grill. In the snow. (Accompanied by a side salad of cucumbers and grape tomatoes, with balsamic dressing. Three steps.)

I plan to have a perpetual stew pot over an open flame in my backyard, whenever this damn snow quits.

I’ve been cooking and baking like crazy and getting great therapeutic relief from it. But, I have always really enjoyed cooking so…..

My only issue is that I can’t find all the ingredients at Wegman’;s any more and have had to resort to the internet to locate some.

    Keep those great blogs coming….

I’m not sure I’m ready for a perpetual stew pot, but grilling outside (for lunch; too dark for dinner) was uplifting. I love Wegmans salmon on a plank (with brown sugar and pepper). That’s probably next. Still mindless, but good and outdoors.

Do I get any points for making shepherd’s pie with the leftover ground beef? Definitely more than three steps. (The power of concentration comes and goes.)

Nice, well done on the Shepherd’s Pie!

About This Site

Upstate New Yorkers love their Wegmans, with a bond that newer customers in other parts of the East are discovering. As a customer and former employee, I share the obsession.

I launched Wegmaniacal in December 2019, to examine the cultlike following the company has developed since its founding in Rochester more than a century ago.

The site stagnated when I left Wegmans and returned to other endeavors. But with rising grocery prices, lowering environmental regulation, and pharmaceutical challenges, it’s time to resume writing here.

Much of what I have to say is positive. Nevertheless, the company is family owned and most of its operations are conducted in private. As a longtime journalist, I’ll also delve into topics Danny Wegman would prefer to keep behind closed doors.
