Get out of my line

Posted on June 16, 2020July 4, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

Last night, a guy in a self-checkout lane had no mask but held one hand over his mouth as he scanned his groceries.

How does this happen? I asked a supervisor and was told we should offer masks to those entering without them. But the supervisor didn’t know where the masks were.

So my new position: Get out of my damned line.

If my employer isn’t going to prevent you from entering the store without a mask, I’m going to prevent you from ringing up your purchases.

Get out of my line.

I’m not going to allow you to complete your unprotected shopping experience. You can buy your toilet paper, your pasta and your beer somewhere else.

My employer isn’t backing me on this. For the time being, he’s paying me an extra $2 per hour to work during a pandemic. That’s not enough to deal with jerks like you. I defy him to fire me.

So get the hell out of my line.

About This Site

Upstate New Yorkers love their Wegmans, with a bond that newer customers in other parts of the East are discovering. As a customer and former employee, I share the obsession.

I launched Wegmaniacal in December 2019, to examine the cultlike following the company has developed since its founding in Rochester more than a century ago.

The site stagnated when I left Wegmans and returned to other endeavors. But with rising grocery prices, lowering environmental regulation, and pharmaceutical challenges, it’s time to resume writing here.

Much of what I have to say is positive. Nevertheless, the company is family owned and most of its operations are conducted in private. As a longtime journalist, I’ll also delve into topics Danny Wegman would prefer to keep behind closed doors.
