Night worker’s diary, 5/14/2020

Posted on May 15, 2020May 15, 2020 by Wegmaniacal

A bit alarmed by my walkthrough. Our toilet paper stash has dwindled to a couple of stacks of single rolls. At other stops on my route, no wipes, no yeast.

You can always tell how busy the day has been by the number of reshop baskets at the front of the store. These are the carts filled with items discarded by shoppers in the aisles or at the registers. Three baskets overflow with flowers, produce, canned goods, and boxed goods.

Situation improves as the night wears on. Reshop items that can be salvaged are returned to shelves. Trucks bring more TP and even a case of wipes, which will surely be gone within an hour of opening.

I had planned to buy a pork tenderloin for a luscious-sounding recipe, but the abundance of trotters and tails slaughters my appetite. Is it my imagination or are we filling gaps in the meat case with pig extremities?

About This Site

Upstate New Yorkers love their Wegmans, with a bond that newer customers in other parts of the East are discovering. As a customer and former employee, I share the obsession.

I launched Wegmaniacal in December 2019, to examine the cultlike following the company has developed since its founding in Rochester more than a century ago.

The site stagnated when I left Wegmans and returned to other endeavors. But with rising grocery prices, lowering environmental regulation, and pharmaceutical challenges, it’s time to resume writing here.

Much of what I have to say is positive. Nevertheless, the company is family owned and most of its operations are conducted in private. As a longtime journalist, I’ll also delve into topics Danny Wegman would prefer to keep behind closed doors.
